| Leben & Wirken (Englisch) | Alan Solomon: My paternal great grandfather, Solomon Dvoretsky, came to the US in 1898. His name was changed, as explained to me once by his daughter (my great aunt), to Samuel Solomon by "a dumb Irishman at Ellis Island who couldn't spell his last name" (she was rather colorful). Jodi Hom: First, note that no names were changed at Ellis Island. There is much written about it and proof of the impossibility. He either changed his name before leaving Europe or after arrival in America. Jodi Hom: On the 1920 census for Lena and Samuel Solomon, it says they arrived in the US in 1913. Their children living with them are Harry, Lewis, Jenny and Sarah. Only Max is missing, but at that point we know he was Married already. They also have a blind niece living with them named Rosie Gourash, born abt 1887. But unless they came to the US for a second time in 1913, this info is incorrect. There is a 1905 NY census for them living at 248 W 41st St. It says that Samuel, Lena, Harry, Max and Louis are all born in Germany and Jennie was born in the US. Solomon works in a paint store. There is a 1905 NY census for them living at 248 W 41st St. It says that Samuel, Lena, Harry, Max and Louis are all born in Germany and Jennie was born in the US. Solomon works in a paint store. There is a 1910 census for them living with all their children. They live at 885 Sixth Av in Manhattan. The 1910 census says that they arrived in the US in 1901 except for Samuel who arrived in 1898. Samuel is working as a printer in 1910. Lena and Samuel were married about 1890 and Lena gave birth to 6 children but only 5 are living in 1910. The 1910 census says that all the children, including Sarah, were born in Russia. In 1915, There is a Samuel and Lena Solomon who live at 1773 Union? (it is cut off) St, in Brooklyn, and with them is Samuel's brother-in-law Joseph Janofsky and Joseph's son Benjamin. No wife for Joseph Janofsky, but it does not say he is widowed. But a bit confusing is that their children are Benjamin (b. 1893/could this be son Harry?), Morris born abt 1895 and a daughter listed as Anet born abt 1900, Maybe this is Jean. The 1915 census says that all of the kids were born in the US. Samuel sells smoked fish and his sons work with him. There are 4 people who fit Samuel's profile and who died in NY after 1940 - none are in the Bronx where he lived in 1940, which means none might be him. Hopefully this link works - do you know how to order death certs for NY deaths before 1949? [4, 5, 6] | |
