| Leben & Wirken | Die Nachfahren von Schleime lebten 2014 in Toronto und Ohio. [2] | |
| Leben & Wirken (Englisch) | The descendant of Schleime live in Toronto and Ohio. Schleime Leib's Dworkins were involved in selling tobacco in Toronto. They may have purchased the tobacco from the US. Interestingly, there is a Levitansky family who immigrated from Chernigov to NY and by 1920 moved to Connecticut where they farmed tobacco. I've not figured out a connection to them yet, but in my gut I believe they are related, and I've wondered if the Toronto Dworkins were supplied by the Connecticut Levitanskys. Of course, it could also just be one big coincidence. Maybe tobacco was simply common for employment for the general population in those days. Here are quotes from emails I received in the past from the great grandson of Schleime Leib Henry opened E. & H. Dworkin Steamship and Bankers in 1917 with his brother Edward. The business continued as Dworkin Travel at 525 Dundas West. Dworkin Travel was the oldest travel agency in Toronto which also carried a wholesale tobacco business at the rear. 525 Dundas St W was the address of the travel agency from 1917 - 1967. I've got a photo of the premises hanging on my office wall. It identifies Harry and Edward as proprietors, lists their many businesses (bankers, travel agents, wholesale tobaccanists) and is written in English, Yiddish, Russian and Polish. BTW if you google Edward Dworkin Toronto, you'll see that the tobacco business is still ongoing, under different ownership. http://www.dworkins.com/ [2, 3] | |
