Maria's (Mary's) name was variously shown in the U.S. as Bromax (death certificate), Braunetz (church marriage record), Braunetz (baptismal record of second child) and possibly Bremer (1870 census). The 1853 birth certificate is deemed correct because most U.S. censuses list Maria's place of birth as Belgium with a German mother, the birth date on the certificate and Maria's death certificate are identical, and Maria's mother married in New York in 1868.\

Maria was born in Brussels to Christina Brammertz, an unwed mother from K\'f6ln. The father is unknown. The mother abandoned her daughter at birth in Brussels, and she was taken in by a church organization which in later years was taken over by the city of Brussels. She was almost immediately placed in a "foster home" in the countryside. After one year, she was placed in a second foster home, where she remained until her mother and mother's husband (recently married) reclaimed her at age 13. Her mother started the process of reclamation when Maria was 8.\
