    • There are no family or public records in the U.S. to directly ascertain Mary's exact birthplace or precise maiden name. However, the 1853 birth certifcate from Brussels must be correct because:

      (1) The maiden name, Brammertz, is similiar to the three known versions of Mary Steffen's maiden name: Bromans (shown on her church marriage record to Peter Steffen); Braunetz (shown on the baptismal record of her second daughter); and Bromax (shown on her death certificate).

      (2) The date of birth, January 5, 1853, is the same as the date of birth shown in the 1900 U.S. census (January, 1853) and almost the same as that shown on her death certificate (January 5, 1852).

      (3) According to the 1900 and 1920 U.S. censuses, Mary's mother was born in Prussia, while Mary was born in Belgium. The name Brammertz can be found primarily in the area around Aachen, Prussia.

      (4) According to the 1920 U. S. census, Mary's native tongue was Flemish, consistent with her foster care background.

      (5) Mary emigrated to the U.S. with her mother in 1867, consistent with other known facts.

No other Belgian birth records remotely match these facts.

    • Name: Maria /Brammertz/
      Name: Marie Thérèse /Brammertz/
      Name: Mary /Steffan/
    • Maria's (Mary's) name was variously shown in the U.S. as Bromax (death certificate), Braunetz (church marriage record), Braunetz (baptismal record of second child) and possibly Bremer (1870 census). The 1853 birth certificate is deemed correct because most U.S. censuses list Maria's place of birth as Belgium with a German mother, the birth date on the certificate and Maria's death certificate are identical, and Maria's mother married in New York in 1868.

Maria was born in Brussels to Christina Brammertz, an unwed mother from Köln. The father is unknown. The mother abandoned her daughter at birth in Brussels, and she was taken in by a church organization which in later years was taken over by the city of Brussels. She was almost immediately placed in a foster home in the countryside. After one year, she was placed in a second foster home, where she remained until her mother and mother's husband (recently married) reclaimed her at age 13. Her mother started the process of reclamation when Maria was 8.

Maria was raised speaking Flemish. Brussels was, then and now, a bilingual city (Flemish and French) surrounded by Flanders, a Flemish speaking province. Unlike now, most residents other than the upper class and city and church officials spoke Flemish.
