| _ORIGIN | I do believe that Eileen’s highest matches from Ancestry, Adam Ginsberg (205), is from the same family as Fanny Lipshitz. His family immigrated to New York in the 1920s. Notably, he descends from a Moshe Salman and Ida Lipshitz. I suspect that’s the connection. Fanny Lipshitz did have a half-brother Moshe Salman. However, this Moshe is three decades older than her according to the records, and it seems improbable they have the same mother. It’s more than possible the records are incorrect. But this is one of those things I’ve been holding in my head and trying to resolve. ————— I do believe that Eileen’s highest matches from Ancestry, Adam Ginsberg (205), is from the same family as Fanny Lipshitz. However, this Moshe is three decades older than her according to the records, and it seems improbable they have the same mother. It’s more than possible the records are incorrect. But this is one of those things I’ve been holding in my head and trying to resolve. Since this search has started, Ancestry introduced a tool which allows you to see how your matches are related to each other. Previously, Michael Korek’s daughter was on Ancestry; she appears to have set her results to private, which does not allow me to compare her to Adam Ginsberg and see if I’m right that they are the same family. When I look at the highest common matches between Adam and Eileen, we have Iris Hough, a first cousin to Adam, who matches Eileen at 119cm. Their family is the Ginsberg-Katz family I sent you the photo of, and to whom I believe your mother is VERY close. I believe I suggested the link was the Ginsberg/Salman line (which has the Lipshitz connection). That said, I’m also looking at pedigree collapse on top of endogamy. Endogamy is when people descend from a small founder population—that’s why Ashkenazi Jewish matches under a certain degree are less reliable. (It’s estimated over 40% of Ashkenazi Jews descend from the same four women). But in Zabludow we have cousins marrying cousins, which is what we call pedigree collapse. Your mother’s next highest match who is not from a Lipshitz line is Norman Siegel at 178cm. Fortunately, he is half-Jewish, so we know the connection is on his paternal line. His family immigrated to Wisconsin pre-WWII. Aside from his very close cousins (all descended from the same couple in Wisconsin), I can find one shared match to him that is decent for him, but not as great for you (Randy Ross 54cm). I have not yet tied their families, but that’s what I’m hoping to do next. Following that we get to Estelle Rosenblum (157), born in Iowa in 1933. The link is probably three generations back. As she was born around the same time as your mother, I have not had luck pushing her tree back far enough on all the lines. Her highest shared match is Daniel Tickton, whose family is from Zabludow, and who I will get to. I cannot tie their families together, although there are complicating reasons for this (see below). There are a few matches who fall in the category of “born in US to immigrants pre-WWII, records impossible to trace, no shared matches to indicate which line, cannot tie them to other lines.” I have built their trees out, and periodically return to each. A number of these are labelled “unassigned” to a parental side by Ancestry, suggesting you might, as expected in a small community, be related in a few different ways Which takes me to the Ticktons. Eileen has three matches from this line (dtickton, Daniel Tickton, and Stanley Tickton, who is the highest at 141). This is a line where we see pedigree collapse at its weirdest—it appears a man married his half niece, and all three men descend from this marriage. This could inflate the amount these individuals share. However, it does appear that there is a common ancestor at some point between Pinchus Tickton (born 1835) OR one of his two wives. However, tracing the parents of Pinchus and his wives is difficult given their dates of birth. It’s worth remembering that some Ashkenazi Jews were only adopting last names for the first time in parts of Europe in the 1830s. So what I am doing is essentially trying to contort around missing records and come at things sideways. It would be helpful to know if there are any new 23andme matches (23andme has enabled 2 factor authentication, which means I can’t just log in to check). | |
