  Leben & Wirken	After marrying, Mai and Daniel went directly to the property on the south side of Paradise Lake (Haas) Lot 26 Conc. 3 & 4, which they had bought from the English Land Company (which had cut all the good timber-pines- from it.) Daniel and his brother Jim?? cleared the land and built a very small log house. All the children were born there with no help, only local women who came in. A large barn was built and a larger home planned. Lumber etc. was gathered and stored in the barn and the basement foundation hole dug, when in 1918 fire consumed everything including one horse in the barn. Daughter Altha Burke Holland remembers the one remaining horse had managed to break it's halter and was running around badly singed. The children walked to S.S 4 to school, but none went any further, as the nearest high school was in Lindsay. Altha remembered that she didn't start school until age 8 as the schoolhouse was quite a distance away for the small children to walk. Nobody had money during the Depression, so none of them had fancy weddings. Bill went off to work at the Bathtub Foundry at Port Hope, Alma went to Toronto and then Oshawa to clean house. She married Herb Clement in Oshawa when he was working in the Box Factory. Neighbors were Cowans (lived where the old Paradise Lodge was), Clements, the Fred Johnsons.
