| _BIOG | There is a lot written about William Dugan in the book "Fragments of a Dream" by L. Dobrzensky. See pages 81 through 89. Some quoted below: He left his native Ballymena for Canada at age 17, boarding a sailing vessel in Cork for the 6 week trip. "Will" worked and played hard as soon as he arrived in Peterborough County. His brother John joined him in Canada after completing a carpenter's apprenticeship in Ireland. In 1865 the brothers walked to Haliburton to look for land on which to start a farm for William had just become engaged. Before John moved back to Peterborouugh in 1867, William started clearing, built a shanty and an outdoor oven in which he baked his own bread, and with the help of John, constructed a 2 storey log house with a verandah on 3 sides. John made windows and door frames by hand. The downstairs consisted of a large living room, a lean-to kitchen and 2 bedrooms. A ladder led to the upstairs, which later served as the children's dorm and playroom July 21, 1867 William married Christina Kidd of Dummer Township in a Christian Bible ceremony. The bride was the daughter of Walter Kidd and Elizabeth MacDonald, Scottish farmers who settled in Warsaw. After the wedding the young couple moved to the Dysart farm and lived in the spacious, home high on a hillside, with a breathtaking view from every window. Christina bore 7 children in 8 years, James, Walter, Ann, Mary Elizabeth, John Daniel & Andrew. Dugan engaged in mixed faming and was best known for his prize sheep. His wife's home-made bread and knitting won many proizes at the Fair. The Dugans were dedicated Presbyterians, and never missed a service. Their children were enrolled in SS #4. Duran was a trustee of the school for several years, and was an active Orangeman. The Dugan home was well-known for its hospitality. Christina Dugan became crippled with arthritis in her forties and died, aged 56t in 1892. Her teenage daughters, Ann 13, and Mai 12, took over the household duties. On December 13, 1901 the farm was registered in Andrew Dugan's name. Having transferred the property to his youngest son, William Dugan moved to daughter Anna Gould's home where he died on October 13, 1906. --Other Fields Baptism: Date: ABT 1856 Place: Came from Ballymena Ireland at age 17.
