| Leben & Wirken (Englisch) | Thomas Pardoe and Evan Evans were the only free-hand decorators there in 1802, excepting Miss Harley, so far as we know. The artists who decorated the opaque china were Rothwell, Pardoe, Young, Evan Evans, and Miss Harley ; that is, so far as I can trace them. Mr. Jewitt gives the artists of the porcelain period as follows : —Young ; Pardoe, an excellent flower painter ; Baxter, a figure painter ; Bevington, a flower painter ; Reed, a modeller of repute ; Hood, a clever modeller ; Jenny, a gold tracer ; Morris, a fruit painter ; Beddoes, best heraldic painter ; Colclough, a painter of birds — much admired ; Evans, a talented flower painter ; and Billingsley, the best painter of flowers. Regarding the name of " Evans," I find there were two Evan Evans and David Evans, both flower painters. So far as I can trace they were uncle and nephew. Evan Evans was at the "Cambrian " at the end of last century. He probably assisted Rothwell and Pardoe in painting on the "opaque china" and earthenware. He died in Swansea. David Evans was rather famous locally as a flower painter, and also as a fruit painter. He left for Staffordshire when the China Works closed at Swansea, and joined Copeland's staff. This fact was a proof in itself that he was a good hand. I give some further particulars of him in the biographical notices herein. Evan Evans was china painter at Swansea. He was born in 1780, and died, aged seventy, in 1850. He probably painted on the " opaque china," under Rothwell and Pardoe. His grand-daughter (Mrs. Roberts) says he painted all his life at the " Cambrian," and made " good money." I cannot trace his work. The impression I gather from some of the old workmen who knew him was, that he was an inferior painter. He probably decorated the earthenware principally. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] | |
