I [Nancy Wolf] sent you [Lisa Silestean] the photo of Benjamin, his wife and child in a seperate email. In 1938, Benjamin visited his siblings Sonia, Morris, and Sam in NYC. My mother was 14 at the time. He informed them of the deteriorating conditions and discrimination of Jews back in Europe. He and the family was living in Slonim which was then considered Poland at the time. His intent was to go back to Poland and bring the remainder of the family to New York. Obviously, he had difficulty doing this. I have documentation of Samuel returning to Slonim to visit Benjamin on a short furlough while he was in the US Army in June 1942. The documentation is his entrance papers back in to the US, it describes him as wearing his Army uniform, and names the contact person at his point of departure in Slonin as his brother, Benjamin Mereminski. The family that remained in Europe was never heard from again but I know they were alive until at least June 1942. [1] |
